Hi! I’m Emmi, your online Finnish teacher. I am a qualified language teacher (MA).
I lived abroad for many years, returned to Finland in 2013 and I now work for myself as an independent language teacher. I started writing the Finking Cap blog, publishing Youtube videos and creating Finnish language courses because I wanted to make a difference in people’s lives. I now have students all over the world who are learning my native language, and I am so grateful that I get to help.
Start Finking - a Finnish Course for Beginners
Start Finking will help you learn the very basics of the Finnish language (see the full syllabus below). The course covers simple vocabulary and basic Finnish phrases as well as exposure to some more practical dialogues in Finnish.
Standard and spoken Finnish
I teach you a mix of standard and colloquial Finnish. The colloquial Finnish you hear in this course is a dialect that is used in southern parts of Finland and in a lot of the media (popular series, music etc). It is not the only dialect there is, but it is one that is very widely used. I don’t get into the details of different regional dialects here – it would simply be too much for a beginner.

The language of instruction is English, and all the translations are in English.

No, there are no live lessons. It is completely self-study.
You can pay by using Paypal or a credit card (via Stripe). All payments are securely handled by those payment processors. I don’t have access to your card details at any point.
I’m there to help! Just write a comment in the lesson page comment section, and I’ll write an answer as soon as I can (although at weekends I take some time off, so it may not be within 24 hours exactly).
I recommend this course to students who know English well. That’s because the language of instruction is English and I use English to provide comparisons between Finnish and other languages.
